Puzzle games

The puzzle games collected here come from the era when a good idea mattered more than hardware. A single screen, a handful of rules, and a difficulty curve that kept tightening until it broke you — that was the whole design brief. Alexey Pajitnov built Tetris around seven shapes and one falling column, and it outlived every machine it was written for. DMA Design took the opposite route in Lemmings: you never control the creatures directly, only hand out jobs and hope the arithmetic works out.

What the 1980s and 1990s did differently

Puzzle titles of the period were built for short sessions and long memories. There was no hint system, no skip button and usually no save — you either read the level or you started over. Many of them were also technically frugal, which is why they ran on an XT as happily as on a 486. That frugality pushed designers toward mechanics you could explain in one sentence and never fully master: matching, sliding, chain reactions, tile clearing. The other strand was the sandbox contraption, and Dynamix owned it with The Incredible Machine, where the level is a physics box and the solution is whatever you can bolt together from cats, balloons, conveyor belts and gravity.
