About the game

Sixty minutes. That's all the time you have to save the princess before the evil vizier Jaffar marries her off to death. No saving, no second chance once the clock runs out. That countdown ticks in your head even while you're dangling by your fingertips over a pit, trying to judge whether the next jump lands or ends three floors down.

Prince of Persia – screenshot 1

Prince of Persia is a platformer designed by Jordan Mechner for Broderbund. You play a nameless hero trapped in the dungeons beneath a palace, and your goal is to fight your way up, find the princess and cut down Jaffar before time runs out. Sounds simple. It isn't.

What made the game famous was the animation. Mechner filmed his own brother running and jumping, then rotoscoped that motion into the game. The result was astonishing for its day. The prince runs up with weight, brakes, grabs ledges, stumbles when he lands from too high — while everyone else's platformer characters moved like puppets on elastic. You sat there with your mouth open, because you hadn't seen anything like it on a computer.

But that realism has a price. The prince doesn't move like a game character — he moves like a person, and people are slow and imprecise. Every jump needs a run-up, every action takes its own time. Step half a stride too soon? You fall onto the spikes. Raise your sword a touch late? You take the hit. The game doesn't reward reflexes, it rewards timing and patience, and it lets you die a hundred times — each one your own fault.

That's exactly why every cleared level is a small victory. It's still an elegant, tense classic — just bring your nerves. You can play it right in your browser, no install needed.
