Supaplex

Supaplex is a 1991 puzzle game clearly inspired by Boulder Dash, but one that carved out its own devoted following through sheer difficulty and a quirky computer-chip theme. You control Murphy, a round yellow creature navigating tunnels through a circuit-board world, tasked with collecting a required number of Infotrons, the game's equivalent of gems, before reaching the exit. It shipped with well over a hundred hand-designed levels that grow progressively more devious.

The core tension comes from Zonks, heavy boulders that fall the moment you dig the ground out from under them, and which will crush Murphy if you are careless. Around these you must contend with Snik-Snaks and Electrons that patrol the corridors, and with the Bug and Terminal mechanics that add timing puzzles to the mix. Every screen is essentially a logic problem where one wrong dig can trap you, seal the exit, or trigger a chain reaction that ends the level.

Its reputation rests on that unforgiving precision. Supaplex demands planning several moves ahead and punishes haste mercilessly, which is exactly why puzzle purists loved it. The distinctive industrial visuals and the deliberate, methodical pace have kept it a nostalgic favorite, and it plays just as cleanly and challengingly in emulation today as it did on a period PC.
