About the game

Death Rally, released in 1996, was the game that put Finland's Remedy Entertainment on the map years before they became famous for Max Payne and Alan Wake. Published with backing from Apogee and GT Interactive, it is a top-down combat racer with a wonderfully mean streak: you race a small stable of cars around isometric tracks, but winning cleanly is optional when you can simply gun down, ram and mine your rivals into scrap instead.

The structure is what gives it lasting appeal. Between races you earn prize money, then spend it on upgrading your car's engine, tyres, armour and weapons, or saving up to buy a faster vehicle entirely. You can bribe officials, sabotage opponents, and take on special bounty races against a rogues' gallery of rival drivers, with the mysterious Adversary waiting at the top of the ladder. That loop of race, earn, upgrade and dominate is genuinely addictive and keeps you coming back for one more event.

It looks and controls superbly for its time, with slick presentation, a driving soundtrack and responsive handling that make the carnage satisfying rather than frustrating. Remedy later re-released it as freeware and remade it for modern platforms, a testament to how fondly it is remembered. As a compact, replayable blast of vehicular mayhem it still holds up beautifully today.
