About the game

Arkanoid is Taito's 1986 arcade reinvention of the block-breaker, and this MS-DOS conversion brought that addictive formula to home computers. On paper it is a descendant of Atari's Breakout: a paddle at the bottom of the screen, a bouncing ball, and walls of coloured bricks to demolish. What Taito added turned a simple idea into a genre landmark — a loose sci-fi wrapper about a spacecraft called the Vaus escaping a doomed mothership, and, crucially, power-up capsules.

Those capsules are what make Arkanoid sing. Destroying certain bricks releases falling letters that, when caught, transform your paddle: expand it, slow the ball, arm it with laser cannons, split the ball into three, or grant the merciful "catch" ability that lets you aim your next launch. Some bricks are indestructible, others take several hits, and the escalating layouts demand real reflexes and angle control. The tension of chasing a capsule while keeping the ball alive is genuinely gripping, and the final confrontation with the boss Doh caps it off.

Arkanoid – screenshot 2

Decades on, Arkanoid remains instantly playable — the kind of pick-up-and-go design that never really dates. The DOS version's controls can feel a touch stiff compared with an arcade spinner, but the core loop of brick, bounce and power-up is as satisfying as ever, and it spawned countless imitators for good reason.
