About Prehistorik

Prehistorik, released by the French studio Titus in 1991, is a side-scrolling platformer built around one gloriously simple idea: you are a caveman with a big club, and you are hungry. Your barbarian hero swings his weapon at prehistoric beasts and hostile fauna, but the real objective in each stage is food. You need to eat your way to a required quota before you can move on, which turns levels into a scavenging run as much as a fight.

It is a game with a lot of personality for its era, all bright cartoon dinosaurs, mammoths and comical enemies, wrapped in the slightly rough-edged charm typical of early Titus productions. The controls are stiff by modern standards and the difficulty can be unforgiving, but there is a goofy, knockabout quality to bonking creatures with a club and hoovering up giant roast dinners that has kept it fondly remembered.

In Central Europe especially, Prehistorik and its sequel became fixtures of shareware collections and school computer rooms, which is a large part of why they endure. Judged today it is a modest, honest platformer rather than a genre landmark, but it captures a very specific slice of early-90s DOS gaming: primitive, colorful and unpretentious fun. If you have any nostalgia for the period, its caveman antics still raise a smile.
