About the game

UFO: Enemy Unknown — released as X-COM: UFO Defense in North America — landed in 1993 and remains one of the most influential strategy games ever built. Designed by Julian Gollop and published by MicroProse, it fused two very different games into one seamless whole. On the geoscape you manage a secret international organization defending Earth from alien invasion: building bases, funding research, intercepting UFOs, and juggling a permanently strained budget while nervous governments threaten to pull their support.

When a craft is shot down or a terror site appears, the game drops you into tense turn-based tactical combat. Here your squad of soldiers advances across a fog-shrouded map, spending time units to move, aim and fire, never knowing where the aliens are lurking. The genius touch is that your troops are fragile and permanent — a rookie can be cut down by a single reaction shot, and a veteran you've nurtured through a dozen missions can die just as easily, which gives every firefight real weight. Recovered alien technology and corpses feed a research tree that slowly turns the tables.

That loop of dread, loss and hard-won escalation is why the game still gets played and remade today. The difficulty is famously steep and occasionally unfair, and the interface shows its age, but the core design is close to timeless. The acclaimed 2012 Firaxis reboot is a direct descendant, yet purists still argue the original's open base management and brutal edge have never quite been matched. It's a genuine cornerstone of the genre.
