About the game

Football Manager, designed by Kevin Toms and published by Addictive Games in 1982, is one of the true ancestors of the entire sports-management genre. Long before the polished modern franchise that borrowed its name, this was a text-and-numbers affair in which you took charge of a lower-division English club and tried to guide it up the leagues through transfers, team selection, morale and financial juggling.

Its influence far outweighs its humble presentation. The match action was famously reduced to short bursts of simple stick-figure highlights, but the addictive loop of buying and selling players, balancing the books and grinding for promotion set a template that countless games have followed ever since. It became a huge success across the 8-bit home computers of the early 1980s and made Kevin Toms a recognizable name to a generation of British players.

Judged purely as a plaything today it is extremely primitive — no graphics to speak of beyond those brief highlights, and depth that modern management sims dwarf. But its historical importance is hard to overstate; nearly every football-management game since owes it a debt. As a piece of gaming heritage it's genuinely fascinating to revisit, even if only to see where the genre began.
