About the game

No tutorial. No hand-holding. Just a blinking cursor, a spreadsheet that looked like it was designed by an accountant who hated people, and a small pile of starting capital standing between you and corporate glory. Big Business dropped you into the deep end and walked away.

Big Business – screenshot 1

Released in 1990 for MS-DOS, Big Business is an economic management simulation where you build a company from the ground up. You start small, make production decisions, manage resources, watch your cash flow, and try to outlast or outmaneuver the competition. The goal is simple enough — grow, profit, dominate. The path there is anything but.

The gameplay is built around numbers and decisions rather than flashy visuals or action. You allocate funds, set production levels, adjust pricing, and react to market shifts. There is a certain satisfaction in watching a well-tuned operation generate profit, and a specific kind of quiet dread when you realize you overextended and the bills are coming due. The interface is functional in the way a Soviet tractor is functional — it does the job, it does not apologize for anything, and it will not slow down for you. Keyboard navigation through menus was the only way forward, which in 1990 was completely normal and in 2024 feels like operating a lathe with oven mitts.

What Big Business got right was the tension of resource management without turning it into a spreadsheet exercise in disguise. There were real decisions with real consequences. Hire too many workers, produce too much, price too high — the market pushes back. It rewarded players who paid attention and punished everyone else without sentiment. That loop held up surprisingly well for its era. What aged poorly is the presentation. The graphics are purely functional, the feedback minimal, and the learning curve is a cliff face with no handholds. You either read the manual or you spent the first hour losing money without understanding why.

Today, Big Business sits in an interesting spot. It predates the genre conventions that games like Transport Tycoon or Capitalism would later establish more accessibly. Playing it now is part history lesson, part patience test. If you grew up with this kind of DOS-era management game, the rhythm will feel familiar — almost comforting, in a bleak sort of way. If you did not, expect a steeper adjustment. Running it in a browser via DOSBox emulation smooths out the technical friction, but the game itself remains as uncompromising as it ever was. For anyone curious about where business simulation games started before they got pretty, this is a reasonable place to look.
