About the game

King's Bounty, released in 1990 by New World Computing, is a landmark strategy game that laid the foundations for one of the most influential series in the genre. Designed largely by Jon Van Caneghem, it casts you as a hero riding across a fantasy map on a quest to recover the stolen Sceptre of Order, hunting down villains and reclaiming the land for the king before time runs out.

The gameplay loop blends exploration, army-building and tactical combat in a way that felt fresh at the time. You recruit creatures into your army from dwellings scattered across the continents, gather clues and treasure, and fight turn-based battles on a grid where positioning and unit type matter enormously. Managing your leadership rating, gold and weekly upkeep while deciding which foes to take on gives it a satisfying strategic rhythm, and the four playable classes change how you approach the challenge.

Its importance is hard to overstate: King's Bounty is the direct ancestor of Heroes of Might and Magic, and you can see nearly every core idea of that famous series in embryonic form here. Even standing on its own it's an engaging, approachable strategy adventure, compact enough to finish yet deep enough to reward careful planning. For anyone interested in the roots of turn-based fantasy strategy, it's essential history that still plays well.
