About the game

Dune II hits the screen with a message you can't escape: "Build or die." Westwood Studios bet on real-time strategy in 1992 as a way to bring Frank Herbert's book to life, leaving us with a sense of desert and political intrigue. Instead of classic turns, you get time and maps full of resources to build your army with.

You play as one of three houses — Atreides, Harkonnen, or Ordos — and your goal is straightforward: have more units and better technology than your opponent until you wipe them off the map. The economy runs on melange, which you harvest with harvesters from the sand dunes. You get money, build a factory, produce a tank, send it south. It's simple, elegant, and oddly addictive, even if the graphics feel like a Legoland construction set.

Controls work through menus and clicking — nothing surprising for DOS in the nineties. Units will listen when you send them into battle, but in complex situations you'll feel like a guide lost in a maze. More interesting is base defense and raid timing. The AI isn't brilliant — sometimes your opponent jumps up from their chair and watches as they bomb you flat, other times they sit idle like a poisoned dog. Playing offline is like playing chess against a computer that can't remember the last move.

Dune II stood at the birth of the entire real-time strategy genre, and that deserves respect. Without it, we might have gotten StarCraft two decades later. For those who remember this game from magazines back then, it remains a monument to the moment when everyone knew what would be played for the next twenty years. Looking back, you can see it was mechanically more precise and less emotional than StarCraft later became, but that's exactly where its purity lies.

Today Dune II is viewed more with historical interest than with expectations of great entertainment. Ancient UI, fuzzy AI, graphics like parchment — it can all wear you down more than entertain. But if you're missing that feeling of how strategy was played in an era when there was no choice, Dune II will take you to sandy reality. It's available in browsers through emulators, and when you return to it knowing that the echo is now called Westwood, not Blizzard, it's actually quite interesting.
