About the game

The Simpsons Arcade Game, released by Konami in 1991, is a quintessential coin-op beat 'em up from the golden age of the genre. Built for up to four players at once, it let a group take control of Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa, each brawling with their own style (Homer's fists, Bart's skateboard, Lisa's jump rope, Marge's vacuum cleaner) as they fought through Springfield to rescue baby Maggie from Mr. Burns and his henchman Smithers.

It was Konami operating at the height of its arcade powers, in the same lineage as its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles machines: bright, chunky sprites faithful to Matt Groening's art, waves of goofy enemies, and the relentless "insert coin to continue" hook that ate quarters by the fistful. Cooperative chaos was the whole point, four friends elbowing each other around a cabinet, and the pace and humor matched the show's early-90s peak.

As a game it's simple by design, more about spectacle and camaraderie than depth, and like most arcade brawlers it's balanced to drain your wallet. But its charm, licensed faithfulness and pure four-player fun have kept it a fan favorite. It went largely unavailable for years due to licensing before later re-releases, which only added to its reputation as a beloved slice of arcade history.
