Nomad について

このレビューはまだ翻訳されていません——原文(English)を表示しています。

The cockpit fills your entire screen. Not a ship from outside, not a cinematic flyby — just you, the dashboard, and a star map that looks like someone spilled salt on black velvet. Nomad drops you straight into the seat and expects you to figure out the rest.

Published in 1993 by Papyrus Design Group, Nomad is a first-person space exploration game for MS-DOS that never quite committed to being one thing. The premise is straightforward enough: you're the sole human survivor of an alien encounter, flying a captured extraterrestrial vessel through a procedurally generated galaxy populated by dozens of alien races. Your job is to survive, trade, negotiate, and piece together why you're out there at all. Think of it as a space sim with diplomatic ambitions — or an adventure game that occasionally asks you to shoot something.

The core loop is built around conversation as much as combat. You dock with alien ships or stations, open a communication channel, and try to figure out what the other species wants. Some races respond well to gifts. Others respond to aggression. A few seem to respond to neither, which I suspect was a bug in 1993 and feels like personality now. The trading system is functional rather than deep, and the combat is serviceable without being the point. What actually holds your attention is the slow accumulation of alien vocabulary — Nomad lets you learn fragments of each race's language over time, which sounds like a gimmick and turns out to be genuinely satisfying.

What made Nomad stick in the memory is that it respected your patience. There was no quest marker, no waypoint, no blinking arrow. The galaxy was large, procedurally assembled, and largely indifferent to your progress. You either developed a feel for its rhythms or you wandered until you ran out of fuel somewhere near a hostile border. By 1993 standards that felt daring. By today's standards it might feel like the game forgot to finish loading. The interface, rendered entirely through static cockpit screens, has held up better than you'd expect — it has a functional austerity to it, like the inside of a real working ship rather than a Hollywood prop.

Nomad is the kind of game that rewards curiosity and punishes impatience, which is either a recommendation or a warning depending on who you are. If you can tolerate a game that gives you a galaxy and a half-explained mission and genuinely means it, there's something here worth your evening. It runs in the browser without complaint, the load times are gone, and the save system no longer depends on a floppy disk you definitely formatted in 1996. That's reason enough to give it an hour and see if the cockpit feels like home.
