Need for Speed 3 Hot pursuit

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit, released by Electronic Arts in 1998, is the entry that arguably cemented the Need for Speed identity for a generation. It doubled down on two things the series did well: a garage of exotic, licensed supercars rendered lovingly, and — crucially — the cops. The Hot Pursuit mode pitted racers against AI police who would actively chase, block and radio for backup, turning a straightforward race into a high-speed cat-and-mouse across scenic point-to-point courses.

That police element was the game's signature, and you could even take the role of the pursuing officer, flipping the usual formula. The presentation was slick for its time, with glossy car models, dramatic tracks running through canyons, forests and coastlines, and a soundtrack that suited the adrenaline. Running well on the 3D accelerators becoming common in the late 90s, it looked and felt fast. Hot Pursuit is remembered as one of the high points of the classic Need for Speed era, and its blend of arcade handling and cop chases proved influential enough that EA revived the Hot Pursuit name years later. It still delivers uncomplicated, exhilarating arcade racing.
