About Wacky Wheels

Wacky Wheels, released by Apogee Software in 1994, was the shareware scene's answer to Nintendo's Super Mario Kart. Developed by Beavis-Soft, it drops you into brightly coloured go-karts driven by cartoon animals racing around tracks with a pseudo-3D, sprite-scaling road that scrolls beneath you. For DOS gamers who could only look on enviously at the SNES kart craze, this was a very welcome slice of the same fun on a home PC.

The formula is familiar but well executed. You pick a character, tear around circuits, and grab weapons scattered along the track, most famously the hedgehogs you fling at opponents to knock them spinning. There's a split-screen two-player mode, a proper championship, and a difficulty curve that rewards learning where to cut corners and when to hold your power-ups. The controls are tight enough that drifting through bends feels good, and the chunky VGA graphics and upbeat sound give it a cheerful arcade energy that suits the pick-up-and-play design.

It's not as polished or as deep as its Nintendo inspiration, and the roster and track count are modest, but Wacky Wheels earned genuine affection as one of the better kart racers on the PC in an age when the genre barely existed there. Fired up today it still delivers quick, competitive races, especially with a friend on the same keyboard, and it remains a fine example of Apogee's knack for turning console-style ideas into satisfying shareware.
