About the game

Codemasters in 1992 was pumping out games like clockwork — cheap, colorful, and designed mainly for kids who couldn't afford anything pricier. DJ Puffs Volcanic Capers fits that mold perfectly, almost suspiciously so.

You play as a small lizard named DJ Puffs, who navigates a volcanic environment filled with enemies and obstacles. The genre is platformer — classic, with no ambitions to change the world. The goal is simple: get through the levels, survive, repeat. Codemasters knew this recipe by heart and didn't stray too far from it.

DJ Puffs can do more than just jump — he can breathe fire, throw scales, and probably use some extra special ability too. On paper, that sounds varied. In practice, it depends on how well the game actually uses its hero, and here Codemasters could be hit or miss. The difficulty is set tolerably — the game pushes hard enough to keep your attention, but doesn't stress you out smashing the keyboard. The music is catchy in that specific way where you find yourself humming it after an hour of play, whether you want to or not.

Why doesn't almost anyone remember this game? Because in 1992, there were dozens of similar platformers running on PC, and DJ Puffs didn't stand out in any particular way among them. At the same time, it wasn't bad — just average in a way that doesn't really burn. The graphics were colorful and readable for the time, you have to give it that. Today the game has aged exactly as expected: the controls are stiffer than memory suggests, and without nostalgic attachment to it, you have no reason to defend it.

Today you'll play it if you want a half-hour trip back to Codemasters' 1992 without any big demands on either side. It's not a gem that someone overlooked. It's solid average of its era — and average from the nineties has an honest charm sometimes, if you know what to expect from it.
