Über Galacta - The Battle for Saturn

Saturn als Kriegsschauplatz — klingt grandios, liefert aber kaum mehr als einen müden Nachzügler im Space-Invaders-Gewand. Galacta kam 1992 auf den Markt, als das Arcade-Shooter-Genre längst den Geist aufgegeben hatte, und schaffte es nicht, diesem moribunden Format neues Leben einzuhauchen.

Es ist das, was man erwartet: Spieler sitzt unten am Bildschirm, Gegner rücken in Reihen heran, man weicht aus und schießt. Die Mechanik ist uralt, die Ausführung dagegen ließ sich Zeit. Galacta präsentiert sich als Billig-Imitation von Titeln, die schon Jahre zuvor vergessen waren. Die grafische Darstellung taugt gerade für das Nötigste — einfache Sprites, spartanisches Design. Das Gameplay fühlt sich träge an, die Kollisionserkennung undeutlich.

Das Interessante ist weniger das Spiel selbst als die Erkenntnis, dass solche Titel überhaupt noch produziert wurden. 1992 — das war die Zeit, in der id Software Wolfenstein 3D herausbrachte, in der Mode-7-Effekte die SNES-Szene dominierten. Und da sitzt Galacta im DOS-Segment und spielt Weltraum-Bingo, als wäre 1982 noch nicht vorbei. Man fragt sich, für wen das gedacht war — bestimmt nicht für jemanden, der einen PC besaß.

Der Wiederspielbarkeitswert sinkt nach der ersten Partie gegen null. Es fehlt der Sog, die Steigerung, irgendetwas Eigenständiges. Galacta ist eine Hülle ohne Inhalt — technisch lauffähig, spielerisch bedeutungslos. Wer Retro-Nostalgie sucht, findet hier nur Langeweile zwischen den Zeilen.

Heute sitzt das Ding irgendwo in einer Abandonware-Ecke. Einen Grund, es anzuklicken, gibt es nicht. Für Puristen, die jeden DOS-Arcade-Titel sammeln, mag es als Kuriosität taugen — als Spiel nicht. Selbst im Browser funktioniert es wie immer: technisch korrekt, emotional tot.
