Galacta - The Battle for Saturn

When you fire up an old computer program called Galacta and immediately get treated to space battles around Saturn, you expect at least something decent. It was par for the course in the nineties — the title and box art promise playful sci-fi, reality often tells a different story.

It's a straightforward action game in the Space Invaders vein, unleashed on computers sometime in 1992 when it was already pretty obvious this style belonged to the previous decade. You pilot something that shoots and have to blast enemy ships falling from the top of the screen. Standard stuff — waves of enemies, ramping difficulty, a few power-ups. No plot, no story. Just defense.

The mechanics work almost flawlessly — you move left and right, shoot upward. There's nothing sophisticated about it, but it's not complicated either. The graphics are dead simple, almost crude — typical DOS fare with basic pixels and lines. Sound? Hardly anyone remembers it, because games like this usually just churned out basic beeps. The pacing feels sluggish — the firing could've been way more responsive.

Galacta isn't a memorable game. It's not bad either. It's that forgotten middle ground — a bland shoot-em-up that got crushed by thousands of more interesting offerings even back then. It had everything, but did nothing particularly well. Today only someone who happens to dig an old floppy out of a drawer remembers it.

If you're hunting for a retro shoot-em-up with real character, go grab Galaga or something from an actual name-brand developer. You'd only pick up Galacta if you want to soak in some DOS atmosphere with zero expectations for the kind of fun you'd still be talking about weeks later.
