Year 1994, mid-afternoon, rain outside, and on the monitor a battle between two armies of fantasy creatures unfolds. Dark Legions by Silicon Knights was exactly the kind of game where you'd lose track of time — not because it was manipulating you, but because there was always reason to make just one more move.

It's a turn-based strategy with fantasy setting, where you build an army from various types of creatures — warriors, mages, undead and other beings — and send it against your opponent's side of the map. The goal is simple: destroy the enemy commander. But the path to him leads through a series of battles that play out in real-time the moment two units make contact. This transition between turn-based planning and action combat was unusual for its time and gave the game a tension that purely turn-based titles lacked.

Each unit has its own set of abilities and in direct combat it matters how you control it. It's not just a matter of comparing numbers — you can attack, defend, cast spells, retreat. Battles seem chaotic at first, but gradually you'll start reading the situation and leveraging your units' strengths. The problem is the learning curve is steep and the game doesn't explain much. The manual was mandatory reading back then, not a supplement.

What set Dark Legions apart from the competition was this hybrid system. Warcraft from the same year went the smooth RTS route, other titles stuck with pure turn-based gameplay — and Silicon Knights carved their own path somewhere in between. It's aged unevenly: the strategic layer holds up surprisingly well, but real-time battles today feel awkward and visually modest even by period standards. Sound was average, music easily forgettable. The atmosphere came more from dark graphics and the feeling that every move could decide the battle.

Today this game will suit those with the patience to penetrate the system without a tutorial and who appreciate strategic layers that aren't immediately visible. It's the kind of title you don't receive as a gift — you have to conquer it. You can run it in your browser via a DOSBox-based emulator, mouse controls work reliably. If fantasy strategies from the early nineties fascinate you like museum exhibits that still function, Dark Legions is worth an hour of your time.
