Über World at War - Stalingrad

Diese Rezension ist noch nicht übersetzt — wir zeigen das Original (English).

Stalingrad. The word alone carries weight. Six months of grinding meat, streets conquered house by house, factories changing hands six times a day. When I inserted the World at War: Stalingrad disk from Avalon Hill back in 1994, I expected it to understand that. It understood halfway.

Avalon Hill had decades of wargaming tradition behind them back then — they started on paper and moved to computers with all seriousness. Stalingrad is a turn-based strategy game set during one of World War II's bloodiest operations. The player commands either Soviet or German forces and fights for control over the ruins of a city on the Volga. Nothing more, nothing less.

Gameplay is pure-bred hex wargaming in the style Avalon Hill knew intimately from their board games. Units move across a hexagonal map, control zones matter, supply lines matter, terrain modifiers matter. Anyone familiar with their earlier titles or other DOS wargames of that era wouldn't be lost. Those who weren't reached for the manual — and the manual was thick. The interface isn't friendly, but it worked the way wargame interfaces of that era worked: without apologies, without tutorials, straight into the deep end.

The problem lies elsewhere. Stalingrad as a subject breathes chaos, proximity, desperation. A hex map can't capture that — and here Avalon Hill didn't help matters with graphics that were sparse even for 1994, or sound design that got nothing out of the Sound Blaster that would pin you to your chair. Atmosphere is missing. You're moving square units across paper because that's essentially all there is. That might be a virtue for a wargame purist. For someone who approached Stalingrad as an experience, it's a cold shower.

What the game does well is tactical fidelity at the systems level. Supply lines, morale, unit type differences — that's honest work. Want a simulation? You get a simulation. Want a movie? Look elsewhere. In 1994, that was a fair deal; today it still is, just with fewer takers.

In a browser, Stalingrad is worth sitting down for if you've played a modern wargame and are curious where the genre stood thirty years ago. Or for someone who remembers loving those numbers and hexagons back then. I'd recommend others start elsewhere — not because this is a bad game, but because it doesn't deliver what the title suggests.
