Knight Games from English Software Company is an action sports title set in a world of tournaments and courtly contests. The basic premise is simple to the point of transparency: the king is bored, he's announced a tournament, the winner might get the princess's hand and will definitely get glory. Medieval times as a backdrop for a series of minigames — nothing more, nothing less. No deep plot, no side quests. Pure action in chain mail costume.

The game rests on several disciplines — various forms of combat and contests where the player controls their knight and tries to defeat an opponent within a set time or number of hits. The controls are straightforward, as befits a title from that era, but certainly not intuitive. Timing your strikes takes practice and a few first attempts end more tragicomically than heroically. The game also offers two-player combat, and that was an argument that decided purchases back in 1988.

What Knight Games brought was atmosphere — albeit technically modest. Pixelated knight figures have their grotesque weight, animation is limited but functional. The game has aged in a way typical of titles from this era: the controls feel cumbersome, the visuals are plain, and the sound is more archaeology than entertainment. Yet there's something in it that anyone from that time immediately recognizes — a straightforward idea executed into a playable form without unnecessary frills.

Today, Knight Games makes sense mainly as a time capsule. If you were sitting at a PC in 1988 looking for a way to kill an afternoon with a friend at one keyboard, this game knew how to deliver. For a modern player with no retro gaming experience, it'll be more of a curiosity than fun. But for anyone wanting to feel what an action title looked like on PC thirty-five years ago — without irony, without excessive nostalgia — it's an honest document of its time.
