Battle Arena Nitoshinden

Battle Arena Nitoshinden is a 1996 fighting game by Tamsoft, published by Takara. As the name gives away, it is a light-hearted spin-off of the Battle Arena Toshinden line — Tamsoft taking its own earnest fighting series and flipping it into outright comedy.

Toshinden was one of the early flagbearers of fully 3D fighting games in the mid-nineties and took itself deadly seriously: weapons, duels of honour, dramatic poses. Nitoshinden knowingly tears that facade down — the familiar cast appears in squashed, cute forms, and the whole production aims at a younger audience as well as fans who appreciate a series able to laugh at itself.

The Japanese games industry of the nineties had a soft spot for parody spin-offs of this kind; big brands routinely received comedic versions, and the practice amounted to a genre of its own.
