About the game

No manual, no mercy. That was pretty much the deal with Zlodej — you got the floppy, you got the game, and figuring out what anyone actually wanted from you was entirely your problem. Neo Software, a Viennese studio that briefly made a dent in the Central European market in the early nineties, put this one out in 1994, and it found its way to Czech PCs the way most things did back then: burned copies passed hand to hand, spine labels written in ballpoint pen.

The premise is exactly what it says on the tin. You play a thief. The game is a point-and-click adventure set in what I'd describe as a vaguely medieval or early modern European town — the kind of cobblestoned backdrop that was cheap to render and easy to populate with suspicious guards and locked doors. Your job is to steal things, avoid getting caught, and presumably string together enough successful scores to matter. Whether there's a deeper story underneath that depends on how generous you're feeling toward 1994.

The mechanics lean on classic adventure logic: click on objects, talk to people, combine items in ways that made sense to whoever designed the puzzle and possibly no one else. Guards are the central obstacle, and they behave with the consistency of a man who has nowhere else to be and nothing else to do. Getting past them requires patience, the right inventory item, and occasionally the willingness to reload and try something you'd already dismissed as stupid. Because sometimes the stupid thing is correct. That's just how it was.

What Zlodej had going for it at the time was its tone — a little dry, a little absurd, not trying too hard to be funny but landing the occasional moment. The setting felt lived-in enough that poking around the environment was its own reward. What has aged less gracefully is the interface friction and the pixel-hunting, both of which were industry-standard misery in 1994 and remain misery now. Some puzzles rely on logic that exists only in the designer's head, which was charming at eleven and is less charming at forty-two.

Today Zlodej is mostly a curiosity — interesting if you want to see what small European studios were doing with the adventure format while LucasArts was setting the genre's gold standard. Playing it in a browser removes the technical hassle, and the game is short enough that you won't lose a weekend to it. If you have a taste for obscure DOS adventures with a bit of personality, it earns an hour or two. Just don't expect a walkthrough to save you from everything.
