You play as either detective Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood, exploring the haunted Louisiana mansion of Derceto after its owner's suicide, and the game leans heavily on H.P. Lovecraft for its atmosphere of forbidden books and creeping cosmic dread. What made it landmark was the technical trick at its heart: polygonal 3D character models moving through hand-painted 2D backdrops, using fixed camera angles to frame each room dramatically.
