About the game

1990, I'm sitting at a 486 trying to figure out what I'm actually playing. Things are happening on screen that Sigmund Freud would rather not describe.

Monty Python's Flying Circus by Core Design is an action game inspired by the cult British comedy series. Those who know Monty Python know what to expect — those who don't will be confused anyway, because confusion is both the intent and the result here. The game pulls characters, visual style, and that specific surrealist logic from the TV source, where nothing makes sense yet somehow fits together.

The game starts as a platformer — you jump, dodge obstacles, standard stuff. But Core Design clearly couldn't leave players in peace, so at some point your character transforms into a fish and the game flips into horizontal shoot 'em up mode in the spirit of Gradius. You're shooting at flying things, camels, and characters straight out of Terry Gilliam's Monty Python animations. The transition between both game styles is abrupt and somewhat disorienting — but that could be intentional design just as much as poor designer judgment, hard to say.

What Core Design pulled off well is atmosphere. Visually the game matches its era — 1990 on PC wasn't exactly a graphics paradise — but the colorfulness and enemy design are distinctly Pythonesque. Music and sound do what they can. Controls are functional, if not particularly refined. The problem lies elsewhere: difficulty fluctuates unpredictably and the game never fully explains why exactly this is happening right now. For Monty Python, that's actually defensible design philosophy. For Core Design in 1990, it might just be an underdeveloped license.

Today people return to this game for one reason alone — nostalgia for the series, not the game itself. As a Monty Python artifact it has its charm, as an action title from 1990 it survived more thanks to the brand than the mechanics. If Monty Python fans enjoy even marginal pieces of their legacy and don't mind slightly chaotic gameplay, spending a quarter hour with it in your browser makes sense. Everyone else might prefer putting on Holy Grail instead.
