13,000 classic computer games now play right in the browser on oldgame.cz, free and in 33 languages
The Czech archive of 37,000 games from the 1980s and 1990s has been online since 2009. DOS, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and Amiga games start with a single click, even on a phone.
– Anyone who wants to play Prince of Persia, Lemmings or Death Rally again no longer needs to install anything. oldgame.cz offers more than 13,000 classic computer games that run directly in a web browser, with no sign-up and no cost.
Games from the DOS and 8-bit era mostly refuse to run on today's computers. oldgame.cz solves this with emulators that run inside the web page itself. Open a game's page, click Play, and within seconds the original version loads, exactly as it looked thirty years ago.
The catalogue holds more than 37,000 games from 20 platforms, from MS-DOS, the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum to the Amiga and arcade machines. Every game has its own page with release year, developer, description and screenshots, and many also include period reviews, walkthroughs and cheats.
"Old games are a piece of history, but most of them simply won't start on a modern computer. We want anyone with a browser to be able to play them, and in their own language."
Honza, who runs oldgame.cz
Games also work on phones and tablets, with touch buttons shown right next to the game. Selected classics such as Doom and Duke Nukem 3D can be played online with friends, again with nothing to install. Alongside global hits, the most played titles include Czech favourites Vlak and Hugo.
Games that are still on sale are not offered for download. Instead the site links to a legal purchase, for example on GOG or Steam. oldgame.cz is funded by advertising and partner links, and everything is free for players.
