About the game

Digger. If you had a computer with a CGA card at home in 1984, you know that tune by heart. And if you didn't know it, you heard about it from a classmate who wouldn't stop bragging about it. Andrew Jenner released Digger Remastered in 1998 as a VGA remake of the original 1983 game — the reason was simple: on the hardware of the time, the original just stopped working reliably.

The game belongs to a genre that sounds a bit clunky today: digging action. You control a small machine in underground tunnels, carving your way through dirt, collecting emeralds and gold bags while trying to stay alive. Enemies — round creatures called Nobbins and their more aggressive cousins Hobbins — chase you through the tunnels, and once a Hobbin reaches you, you're done for. A gold bag that falls on an enemy will temporarily disable it, but a new monster soon appears from the edge of the screen. Levels don't end, they just keep building pressure.

The controls are brutally simple — four directions, no jumping, no special attacks. Your only weapon is a beam that freezes Hobbins for a moment, but the ammo runs out fast and recharges slowly. Tension doesn't come from complex systems, but from good old geometry: which way to go so the creatures don't cut off your escape route. That apparent simplicity is a trap. As a kid, I underestimated the game and died eight times on the first level.

The 1998 Remastered version brought VGA graphics and compatibility with Windows 95, 98, and XP — at a time when plenty of old DOS games simply refused to run on newer systems. Jenner did honest work: he preserved the feel of the original, added smooth colors, and the game finally stopped demanding a specific old hardware configuration. No revolution, just a rescue. That was enough.

Today Digger Remastered suits anyone who loves games where the manual doesn't kill you, but your own decisions under pressure do. Thirty seconds to understand, years to master — that's not a cliché, that's a description of the game loop. It does not run in the browser here — the page carries a description, screenshots and the release data. And if you played it in the nineties on a square monitor — you know what to expect. Mainly, that you'll lose way sooner than you think.
