About Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines arrived in 1998 as Pyro Studios' debut, and it landed like a thunderclap. Instead of the base-building and unit-spamming that defined real-time strategy at the time, it offered something far more deliberate: small squads of Allied specialists sneaking through meticulously drawn World War II landscapes, from North African deserts to snowbound Norwegian fjords. Each mission is essentially a hand-crafted puzzle where a single mistake can send the whole plan crashing down.

The genius lies in the cast of six commandos, each with a fixed role. The Green Beret can knock out sentries and hide bodies, the Sniper takes distant kills with a single precious bullet, the Marine handles the water, the Sapper lays explosives, the Driver commandeers vehicles, and the Spy can slip into an enemy uniform to walk past guards. You have to juggle their abilities in careful sequence, watching the shaded vision cones of every patrol, because there is no brute-forcing your way out. Direct combat almost always means death.

It is punishingly hard, and that reputation is well earned. Quicksave becomes your closest friend, and some of the later maps demand near-perfect timing. But the tension of orchestrating a flawless infiltration, then watching it unfold, remains genuinely thrilling. The isometric artwork still looks gorgeous, dense with detail and atmosphere. It spawned a long-running series, yet the original's stripped-back purity holds up as one of the finest tactical games of its decade.
