Viewpoint

Viewpoint was built by Aicom for the Neo Geo around a single stubborn idea: a shooter seen from an isometric angle instead of the usual top-down or side-on view. Your craft moves across a tilted grid, and enemy fire travels through a space your eye is not trained to read. Most of the early learning curve is not about reflexes at all. It is about working out where a bullet actually is.

SNK positioned it as a showcase title, and the visuals reflect that. Bright geometric surfaces sit next to metallic and organic enemy designs, and the soundtrack is one of the things people remember longest about the game. It looks unlike almost anything else in the genre from 1992.

The difficulty reputation is deserved. Enemy waves approach along paths that isometry makes genuinely hard to predict, and there is little margin for a late correction. The skill it rewards is not the pixel-level weaving of later bullet hell games but forward planning: reading the formation, deciding early which lane will still be open, and committing to it.

The Mega Drive conversion works with far fewer colours and smaller sprites than the arcade hardware allowed, and the machine is clearly stretched. It remains a respectable port of one of the most distinctive shooters of the early nineties, and it is one of the few chances to play the game outside emulation of the original board.
