Golden Axe III from 1993 closes the trilogy of fantasy brawlers with which Sega competed against the arcade hits of the late eighties and early nineties. Its distribution is a curiosity: the third entry appeared on cartridge only in Japan, reaching American players mainly through the Sega Channel service, which makes it the least known chapter of the series in the West.

The foundation is intact: a warrior cuts a path left to right through hordes of enemies, aided by weapons, magic and the rideable beasts that remain the brand's trademark. The third game added a choice of several heroes with distinct fighting styles, new moves including blocks and evasions, and branching routes, so a single path no longer leads through the game.

It shines brightest with two players at one console — cooperative brawling was always the genre's greatest asset and Golden Axe was no exception. A solo player can at least pick the hero whose style suits them best.

By 1993 a different breed of brawler ruled the genre and the Golden Axe series was winding down; the third entry is a dignified full stop rather than a revolution. For Mega Drive fans, though, it remains a mandatory item to explore. Each hero changes the game's rhythm enough to justify a second run.
