About the game

Simple it never is. Ski down, dodge trees, and stay on the slope — that's Skiing, a game that in 1984 proves fun isn't about polygons and cinematic cutscenes, but about constantly losing.

Skiing – screenshot 1

It's an arcade ski run on PC. Move left, move right, brake — that's all. The screen scrolls downward, obstacles rush at you and you have to avoid them. The graphics are basic — just black lines of trees on a white surface and your skier as a tiny rectangle. Sound? Minimal. But that straightforwardness is actually beautiful — the game doesn't want your time, it wants your attention right now.

Playing is frustrating in the best way possible. The controls respond, the physics are predictable, but when an obstacle approaches and you have maybe two tenths of a second to pick the right direction, you realize your reflexes aren't what they used to be. One mistake and it's over. Then you try again. And again. The game pulls you in through its own logic: I want to ski just a little bit better. I want to see how far I can get. The trees are placed to look random, but they're not — each run is identical, it's a test of reflexes, not memorization.

There were plenty of games like this in the eighties. But Skiing stuck in people's minds because it came preinstalled on many PCs as a demo. People played it because it was there. And surprisingly, they stayed. There's nothing extraordinary about it, but there's purity of purpose — meet the forest, survive.

Today you play it to realize how little a game actually needs to hook you. No story, no points — just time and a tool to spend it. You'll find it in retro game archives or run it in your browser. A few minutes and you'll understand why everyone played this back then.
