Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003) reinvented Jordan Mechner's classic for the 3D era, and it did so triumphantly. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, it followed a young Persian prince who unwittingly unleashes the Sands of Time, transforming a palace's inhabitants into sand creatures. The story is framed as the Prince narrating his own tale, a device that pays off cleverly whenever you die — "No, no, that's not how it happened" — and time rewinds.

That rewind mechanic, powered by the Dagger of Time, was the game's masterstroke. It let the acrobatic platforming be genuinely demanding while removing the frustration of instant failure — mistime a leap and you could simply reverse a few seconds and try again. The parkour itself was a joy: wall-running, vaulting, swinging and leaping through gorgeous, trap-laden environments with a fluidity that felt revolutionary. Combat was the weaker element, but the movement and puzzle design carried it effortlessly.

The banter between the Prince and Farah, his reluctant companion, gave the adventure real warmth and wit. Sands of Time is widely regarded as one of the finest action-adventures of its generation, and its influence on 3D platforming and the later Assassin's Creed games is direct and profound. It holds up beautifully — the pacing is tight, the atmosphere enchanting, and the core loop still feels wonderful.
