About the game

Beats of Rage is a freeware beat 'em up created by the Dutch group Senile Team and first released in 2003. It's an open homage to Sega's Streets of Rage, borrowing that series' side-scrolling brawling structure while filling its cast with fighting-game sprites, most famously characters lifted from SNK's King of Fighters, giving it a distinctly cut-and-paste, fan-made character.

What makes it historically significant is what it spawned: the game's engine was released to the public and evolved into OpenBOR, an open-source beat 'em up engine that a whole community used to build and share their own brawlers for years afterward. That legacy turned a single tribute game into a genuine platform.

As a game it delivers exactly what its inspiration promised, walking right, pummelling waves of thugs and picking up weapons and food, with the rough edges you'd expect from a community project. It holds up as a fun, unpretentious brawler and, more importantly, as the seed of one of the more productive homebrew scenes of the 2000s.
