About Wild West World

The saloon wizard tells you there's no room for weaklings here. Wild West World from 1992 is a strategy game that casts you as someone trying to build an empire in the Wild West — and it has no time to convince you it'll be fun.

It's a turn-based top-down affair where you manage your town, gather resources, build structures, and recruit units. The goal is straightforward: expand, hold your territory, and crush your rivals. The game gives you a list of buildings — a shop, barracks, tower — and you decide what to build and when. There's no story, just math and logistics. Like Civilization, but in miniature and without the scope.

The controls are intuitive even for DOS — you click, select, confirm. The graphics are spartan; you wouldn't be surprised if it was just smileys on a black background, but Wild West World tries. Little unit icons, schematic buildings, simple terrain. You read the game state from numbers and text more than from visuals. Playing it doesn't feel thrilling; more like filling out a ledger. Anyone who enjoys strategic planning and doesn't need games to entertain them will find their groove here.

From today's perspective, Wild West World is a ticket to the era when strategy was purely a matter of the CPU, not the eyes. It has no ambition to be game of the year, and there's nothing to brag about either. But it had its place — it showed that even old PCs could run games without flash, just mechanics. It aged like old iron: functionless without nostalgia and context.

Try it in an emulator if you're drawn to puzzle-strategy from the nineties. You won't get an experience — you'll get a puzzle. And sometimes that's exactly what you want.
