About the game

You pilot a special flying armored vehicle and waves of enemies rain down on you. Major Stryker is a classic vertical shooter from the early nineties published by the creators of Wolfenstein — iD Software actually made the shooter, but here they only licensed out a new engine and let a third party do the work. There's a lot happening on screen at once and you need to fly, shoot, and collect power-ups, or you'll get torn apart.

Simple, but elegant: you control your craft in four directions, keep your finger on the trigger, and shoot. The game looks like a sci-fi clash — something between early Raptor and the future — with cosmic surroundings and space warfare. The maps are far from just empty wastelands; you see painted landscapes, shifting backgrounds, which meant solid attention to detail in PC graphics of that era. The ship moves precisely, you feel air resistance, it's not robotic teleportation. Bullets have weight, they fall down, it's not just straight up.

That's exactly what makes the game addictive. It's not just "drive in and mash the button." You have to account for ballistics, positioning, the fact that a treacherously placed enemy can nail you from the side. Power-ups are scattered around, but not crazily — you grab a better weapon, you're stronger for a while, then it vanishes and you're back to basics. Hard to say how long one level is, but it's not endless. The difficulty curve is reasonable, not sudden.

The beta status is a bit vague — it runs without crashes in the emulator, the sound is from SoundBlaster, unnecessarily loud music under fire, but you don't mind. Graphics don't stutter, it doesn't skip. An old PC engine that iD used for Space Cadet Pinball — here it's pretty fair in terms of latency and smoothness. The game already has its own style from a decade ago, it's not a clone of anything known.

Today it's not revolutionary, more of a curiosity for those collecting DOS shooters. When you fire it up in a browser through DOSBox emulation, it's not clicking on nothing, it's playing — your brain has to calculate, your eye track, your thumbs pull levers at the same time. It'll click with you if you like tactile stuff instead of party effects, if you're not turned off by the fact that after forty seconds you know how the game works.
