About the game

If the game were called Jump, it would be a perfect metaphor. Krkal is a Czech pixel-art arcade from the late nineties that many of us discovered in computer labs on unmarked floppy disks. Simple, unforgiving, without mercy — exactly how we played in '97 at school.

It's all about a little character — essentially a legendary raven — jumping across the screen and collecting what it needs. Each level is made up of platforms, obstacles, and enemies that are literally out for your blood. The goal is classic: reach the end, collect as much as you can, stay alive. No complicated rules, no plot twists — pure mechanics wrapped in pixel art, the kind of thing every schoolkid would sit down and play without hesitation.

The controls are straightforward — jump left, jump right, jump up, collect stuff. The game doesn't coddle you; its difficulty ramps up almost aggressively. By the second level you'll realize there's no hand-holding here. The pixels are jagged, the animation minimal, the sound harsh and unglamorous. This is tough, unyielding fun — either you jump in time or you're dead. No pause button.

Krkal belongs to that category of games people remember precisely because nobody talks about them much. It wasn't a commercial hit, it didn't make any "best of" lists, but it worked. Simple Czech software that took you maybe five minutes to learn all the tricks. The game never had time to carve itself into memory like Xonix or Arkanoid, but it stuck around in computer labs for years.

Today it's mostly a memory of a time when less was enough. If you're curious about how games were played in Czech computer rooms in the nineties — when you had everything and yet nothing — this is it. An arcade with no frills, no story, just jumping and collecting. You can play it in your browser, but be warned: this game won't give you anything for free.
