Indiana Jones in the Lost Kingdom, published by Mindscape in 1984 for the Commodore 64, is one of the very first games starring the famous archaeologist, and easily the strangest. It is not an action game and not a cinematic adventure but a pure puzzle game, and its central trick is that it deliberately tells you nothing. The game shipped without a manual on purpose, the reasoning being that a proper archaeologist should figure things out for himself.

Every screen of the lost kingdom is a self-contained riddle. You see Indy, a few objects, some odd creatures and mechanisms, and that is all the guidance you get. What the game expects from you, which rules apply on this particular screen, what kills you and what opens the way forward — all of it has to be deduced by watching and experimenting. Sometimes the answer is the right order of steps, sometimes it is understanding how a single creature behaves. The game is not testing your reflexes; it is testing your ability to form a hypothesis and verify it, usually at the cost of many of Indy's lives.

This concept splits players into two camps. Solving a room on your own delivers a rare feeling of genuine discovery that ordinary games of the era simply did not offer. But the road there leads through piles of blind attempts and deaths you often cannot explain. Frustration is not a flaw of the design here; it is part of it, and the question is how much of it you are willing to take.

Seen today, it is more of an interesting experiment than a polished work. The graphics are plain even by 1984 standards, the animation is stiff, and without period context it is easy to slide into mechanically trying everything on everything. It is still worth an hour of your time, though, as a reminder of an era when even a big licence could take real risks.
