About Match Point

Tennis settled onto home computers early because it suited them so well: simple rules, a court that fits on one screen, and a two-player match that needs no explanation. Match Point was developed by D&L Research and published in 1984 by Psion, a company later known mainly for handheld computers but at the time one of the more respected British software houses.

The catalogue records it as a sports title with an overhead view, which in tennis games of this vintage normally means a slightly angled look at the whole court with both players visible at once. Two design decisions determine how such a game feels. The first is the timing window on a stroke; the second is how much of the running to the ball the computer handles for you. Get that division wrong and the player spends the match fighting the interface rather than the opponent.

On the Commodore 64 these games benefited from a wider palette and better audio than rival eight-bit machines offered, so the presentation could hold up against later titles. Stroke animation was always a compromise, because every additional frame of movement cost memory that was needed elsewhere.

The record also lists multiplayer support, which is the more rewarding way to approach any tennis game from this era. A match between two people at one machine sidesteps the artificial intelligence, which in 1984 was the weakest part of almost every sports title ever written. The game runs directly in the browser here, so it takes only a few rallies to judge how responsive the controls are and how long the game will let a point continue.
