Bomb Jack

When Bomb Jack comes up in the arcade scene, most people think of the original classic by Mighty Bee from the eighties. This 2002 freeware remake for DOS and Windows tries to bring that legacy to life on your home computer — with mixed results.

You're a graffiti artist or something like that, tasked with collecting bombs scattered across each level. Yes, collecting bombs. You don't jump on enemies, you don't defeat them — you simply grab them before something catches you. Ten levels, each bigger and more complex, with platforming where every wrong jump costs you a life. Enemy behavior patterns are predictable, but that's not really the problem — the goal is to learn their rhythm and time your moves.

The controls are simple, as befits a platformer — arrow keys to move, spacebar to jump. The game runs smoothly, no lag to speak of. The graphics are pixel-based but clean — you can see what's happening. Sound? Minimalist, barely there, and it doesn't really matter. The problem is that the game lacks the spark of the original. There's no lightness to it, no elegance. It feels more like an exercise in patience than fun. After three or four levels, you'll know exactly what you're doing — and then you're just repeating yourself.

Bomb Jack was never a masterpiece, but it had character. This version preserves it more like a soulless blueprint. It's not bad — it's just unnecessary. If you want a retro platformer, grab something with more charm or more challenge instead.
