About Basket Manager

There are sports management games, and then there are sports management games nobody outside Italy remembers. Basket Manager from Simulmondo lands firmly in the second category, and yet here I am, thinking about it thirty-odd years later.

The premise is exactly what the title promises: you run a basketball club. Not from the court, not with a joystick, but from behind a desk — roster decisions, lineups, tactics, the whole dry business of keeping a team alive and competitive. Simulmondo was an Italian studio that carved out a modest niche in sports simulations around 1990, and this was their take on the NBA dream filtered through a DOS prompt and a lot of spreadsheet logic.

The gameplay is text-heavy and menu-driven, which was standard for the genre at the time. You cycle through options, set your lineup, tweak your strategy, and then watch the match results roll in as numbers rather than animation. There is no crowd noise, no slam dunk rendered in four colors — just cold data telling you whether your decisions paid off. On a bad day it feels like doing accounting. On a good day it feels like you actually know something about basketball that the game rewarded you for knowing.

What made it stick was scarcity. In 1990, if you wanted a basketball management game on DOS, your options were thin. Simulmondo filled a gap, and filling a gap counts for something. The game does not pretend to be deep strategy — the systems are fairly shallow by any modern measure, and the AI opponents are not going to outsmart you once you learn the rhythm. But it had enough structure to keep you coming back for one more season, which is the only metric that matters at that age when homework is theoretically due tomorrow.

It has aged about as well as you would expect from a 1990 text-based Italian sports sim. The interface is clunky, the documentation assumes you either speak Italian or enjoy guessing, and the feedback loop between your decisions and the results on the court is thin enough that causality sometimes feels optional. There is no grand story here, no memorable moment burned into memory the way a great goal or a comeback victory would be. What you get is a curiosity — a small, honest piece of software that did one modest thing and did it well enough.

If you play it today in a browser, go in with low expectations and genuine interest in the genre's history. It will not convert anyone who needs polish or depth. But if you want to understand where sports management games came from before Football Manager made the whole thing respectable, spending twenty minutes with Basket Manager is a reasonable way to find out. Just do not expect it to keep you up past midnight.
