Diablo

Released by Blizzard in late 1996, Diablo took the venerable dungeon-crawler and stripped it down to something anyone could pick up in seconds: click to move, click to fight, descend. Beneath the town of Tristram lie sixteen levels of a randomly generated cathedral, and at the bottom waits the Lord of Terror himself. The genius was in the pacing — the endless click-loot-click rhythm, the constant trickle of new weapons and armor, the way the darkness always seemed to hide something worth grabbing.

You picked one of three heroes — Warrior, Rogue, or Sorcerer — and each played distinctly enough to justify a second run. The randomized levels and item drops meant no two descents were the same, and finding a rare item with a golden name was a genuine thrill. Matt Uelmen's brooding score, especially the mournful guitar of the Tristram theme, remains one of the most atmospheric soundtracks of the era. The isometric art was grim and grounded, a real departure from the brighter fantasy of the time.

Diablo essentially defined the action-RPG template that Torchlight, Path of Exile and countless others still follow, and its Battle.net multiplayer helped make online play mainstream. It holds up remarkably well today — the interface is clean, the loop is timeless, and the slow-burn dread of going ever deeper still works. If anything, its restraint compared to its sequels makes it feel more focused and eerie.
