Flashback

Flashback: The Quest for Identity was Delphine Software's 1992 cinematic platformer, and one of the most visually striking games of its generation. You play Conrad B. Hart, a secret agent who wakes on the jungle moon of Titan with no memory, having recorded a message to himself before his mind was wiped. He discovers that shape-shifting aliens have infiltrated human society, and his quest to recover his identity and expose them drives the story across a series of atmospheric levels.

The game built on the rotoscoped-animation approach pioneered by Prince of Persia and Delphine's own Another World, but pushed it further. Conrad moves with a weighty, lifelike realism: he runs, rolls, hangs from ledges, and draws his pistol with fluid, hand-crafted animation. Combat and traversal both demand deliberate timing, and the world is full of hand-drawn, polygonal backdrops that gave it a genuinely filmic quality. Cutscenes rendered in the same style tied the espionage plot together.

Flashback was a commercial and critical hit, at one point among the best-selling French games ever made, and its influence on the cinematic platformer is clear. The deliberate, methodical controls can feel stiff to players raised on twitchier games, and the difficulty is steep. But its atmosphere, animation, and sense of a coherent sci-fi world have aged remarkably well, and it remains a landmark of early-90s design.
