About Manic Miner

Manic Miner. I first heard that name from a classmate who brought it on a floppy disk along with some snacks and the claim that "they were playing this in England before we were." He was right — the original game by Matthew Smith came out on ZX Spectrum in 1983 and was one of those titles that defined what a platformer actually is. This DOS version by Alchemist Research from 1997 is therefore a port, or rather a tribute to the good old days — depends how you look at it.

Manic Miner – screenshot 1

You play as a miner named Willy who fights his way through a series of underground caverns full of enemies, moving platforms, and devious traps. On each screen you collect items and move to the next room. Nothing more, nothing less. No story, no RPG elements, no cutscenes. Pure, uncompromising platform logic from an era when every pixel was intentional and every death was your own mistake.

The controls are simple — move left, move right, jump. And yet, or perhaps because of this, Manic Miner is brutally challenging. Enemies move on precise paths, you have to judge the rhythm and slip through the gap with split-second precision. The DOS version stays true to this original philosophy faithfully, without mercy and without concessions. Fall into acid, touch an enemy, mistimed jump — game over. Back to the start of the room, or straight to the beginning of the game if you run out of lives. The difficulty hasn't aged poorly because it was never modern — it's always been this straightforward.

What the DOS port brings compared to the Spectrum legend is smoothed-out graphics matching a VGA palette and slightly finer sound. It's not a big technological leap, but the game looks fresh and legible. Paradoxically, it makes it a bit less human — the original Spectrum version had that crispy pixel aesthetic that today feels like a retro artifact with its own soul. This version is more of a careful tracing than a reinterpretation. Which isn't a criticism, just an observation.

Today I'd recommend it mainly to those who want to experience how platformers worked before Mario came along and convinced us that a hero needs to be able to do at least five things at once. Manic Miner is a school of patience and rhythmic thinking. You can finish it in an afternoon in your browser — or you won't finish it at all and come back a week later to try again. Both are legitimate results.
