First, you have to realize that in 1984, these things didn't exist — the internet, Twitch, real-time analytics. And yet there was an idea: a baseball simulation that I play, not the computer. MicroLeague Baseball was a pioneering step into the world of sports games, where strategy replaced reflexes.

It's turn-based baseball where all the decisions fall on you. You choose players, plan their positions, decide on tactics — all on paper, in tables. The computer then just calculates what happened and returns the results. It's a strange hybrid between a board game and a simulator that won't let you watch the match in real time. You just build your team and see what happened.
Playing revolves around numbers and probabilities. The computer has player statistics in memory, their strengths and weaknesses. You write up the lineup, and then the game unfolds according to the logic of baseball filtered through pixelated DOS. It's not immediately fun — there's no visualization, no drama. But when you've created a strategy yourself and see how it works, you feel like you're actually doing it.
In the nineties, it was the thing. You didn't care about graphics, which were poor anyway. But here it was about creating something of your own. MicroLeague Baseball spawned a dozen games that continued in the same approach — simulations where your brain is the processor.
Today you'll play it in the browser mostly out of nostalgia or curiosity. The mechanics are clear, the logic pure, but without content the game lacks a certain body. However, if you want to understand how sports simulations came about and why they're so different from games today, this is a good starting point. It's a textbook on how to make something complex without graphics.
