It calls itself a strategy game, but really it's chaos with a map and lasers. Galactic Conqueror from 1988 by an obscure developer is one of those games that thought it had invented space warfare. Instead, it just spread it across the screen and left it there.
It's a real-time strategy focused on galactic conquest. Maps are packed with planets you need to seize, enemies pour in like an avalanche, and you've got a handful of units that keep getting lost in the graphical mess. The goal is simple: annihilate your opponent, control space, be the strongest. Nothing strange, nothing revolutionary.
The controls fall somewhere between strategy and action. You've got to click, drag, shoot, and think all at once. When it works, there's a certain tension—you knew your fleet would end up like dust in this space battle. The graphics are pure '80s: simple shapes, flickering lines, colors straight out of a fluorescent safety vest. The sound is what someone back then probably appreciated if they thought beeping was music.
Today, Galactic Conqueror looks like a moderately ambitious attempt at more than the technology of the time could honestly handle. It's not a polished strategy game like Master of Orion, which came a year later and everyone remembers. This one had too much ambition, too little precision in its design.
