In the eighties the Paris-Dakar rally was a media event that practically demanded a video game adaptation: long desert stages, off-road vehicles, mechanical damage and navigation. Big Run, produced by the Japanese company Jaleco in 1989, takes that world and translates it into arcade racing.

Building a game around a rally raid differs from building one around circuits. The course is not a closed loop but a stage with a finish you must reach inside a time limit. Surfaces change, terrain is uneven, and rivals are not the primary obstacle; the clock and your own mistakes are.
