Toughman Contest

Toughman Contest was published by Electronic Arts in 1995 for the Sega Genesis, and it is a boxing game built on the real American competition of the same name. Toughman was an amateur circuit almost anyone could enter — firefighters, bouncers, guys from the sawmill — and the roster reflects that. There are no heavyweight legends here, just two dozen brawlers with Eric “Butterbean” Esch, the star of that scene at the time, waiting as the final opponent.

Bouts run three rounds of one minute each, which puts the emphasis on reading your opponent quickly. You get a jab, a hook and an uppercut, a block and a duck, plus three special punches — the Super Uppercut and the Popeye Punch among them — that can turn a fight around but leave you wide open. The fighters are digitised sprites, heavy and thickset, and each has his own habits: the AI follows patterns you can learn, but it is also happy to bully you with unfair strings.

That is where the main problem sits. Your input lands a fraction of a second later than you expect, and every big swing leaves you vulnerable for a long moment. Some players read that as deliberate heaviness suiting untrained brawlers; others will simply call it sluggish. Either way, fights are decided by patience and counter-timing rather than finger speed, which was an unusual demand in 1995 and caught plenty of people out.

It is worth a look mainly for the Sunday-television atmosphere and for two-player matches, where the slow pace turns into a standoff about who drops their guard first. The solo climb through the bracket is more grind than fun, and it never reaches the top rank of Genesis sports games. But if you want boxing that feels like a fight in a hall outside town rather than an Olympic event, this is it.
