Sampras Tennis 96 is a Codemasters tennis game for the Sega Mega Drive. The record gives 1995 while the title says 96, which was standard practice for sports releases: they shipped in autumn carrying the number of the coming season so they would not look stale on the shelf.

Codemasters was a British studio known for inexpensive but technically inventive products. On the Mega Drive it became famous for cartridges carrying extra controller ports built into the cartridge itself, letting several people play without buying a separate adapter.

The catalogue lists a third-person view. For console tennis that means a camera behind the player looking up the court, which conveys the depth of a shot far better than an overhead angle. The Mega Drive had to build that sense of space out of layered sprites, since it had no hardware sprite scaling.

1995 marks the end of the Mega Drive's life cycle. Next-generation consoles were already on sale, and sixteen-bit titles from these final years were usually technically accomplished but backed by much smaller marketing budgets.

Console tennis always faced the same problem: how to distinguish a lob, a smash and a flat drive using one button and a direction pad. The usual answer was timing and player position at the moment of contact rather than dedicated buttons. The six-button pad that reached the Mega Drive around this period gave sports titles room for more depth.
