Super Hang-On

A motorcycle tears up the asphalt in the summer of '87, and you're sitting at your computer in the snow, dreaming of your foot on the throttle. Super Hang-On is Sega's arcade racing game that made it to DOS computers with whatever it could manage — no flashy arcade graphics, no joystick vibrations, no smell of hot engine and gasoline. It's a muffled echo of what made arcade games great.

You're on a motorcycle tackling a descent through mountain switchbacks. The goal is simple: ride as far as possible without crashing, collect bonus times on individual tracks, overtake opponents. The game lives by a minimalist bird's-eye view where you see the road as strips winding across the screen. The landscape rushes past when you're riding normally; when you nail it and maintain good speed, the mountain peaks vanish beyond the horizon.

The controls are straightforward — arrow keys for steering, spacebar or up arrow for throttle, motorcycle tuning without unnecessary complications. In the MS-DOS version, you miss the variety of the arcade — the scenarios are just a few repeating motifs, the sound is a beeping of tones from whatever the speaker could generate, the colors dark and dull. You had to play this game with imagination to fill in what the computer couldn't deliver.

Super Hang-On is remembered because Sega had cult status in the arcade scene. The home versions on 8-bit and 16-bit systems partially captured that feeling — the fleeting thrill of watching the road twist. But the DOS version is unnecessarily stripped of the pull that would make it worth playing if you're not after an authentic arcade experience.

You might try it for collector's reasons or nostalgia for the days when such ports were the only thing you could play on your home computer. It's not a bad game — just a diminished version of something that lived in a dark room with bright lights and the felt resistance of a motorcycle beneath your weight. Without that, it loses half its power.
