From Kain to Raziel

_

Legacy of Kain opened in 1996 with Blood Omen, built by Silicon Knights and published by Crystal Dynamics. It is an isometric action RPG in which you play Kain, a nobleman murdered on the road and brought back as a vampire. Health does not come from potions but from blood, so ordinary encounters double as supply runs and you learn to leave a victim standing for later. Transformations do the rest of the work: bat form covers the map in seconds, wolf form reaches ledges Kain cannot, and mist slips through bars that would stop a body. They are traversal and puzzle tools, not decoration, and much of the map is gated behind whichever form you have unlocked.

Three years on, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver kept the world and swapped both hero and genre. You play Raziel, executed by Kain and returned as a wraith who can shift between the material and spectral planes. The same room reads differently in each: platforms sag into new shapes, water stops holding you up, a gap opens where a wall stood. Progress is less about combat than about deciding which plane you enter a chamber in, and the world streams together without the load screens the hardware usually demanded.

What separates the sequels

Soul Reaver 2 pulls back on climbing and platforming and pushes the writing forward, with time-paradox arguments about what can still be changed. Blood Omen 2 hands Kain back to the player in third person, built around stalking guards and taking abilities from the ones you beat. Defiance alternates between the two protagonists in one story and fixes the camera at cinematic angles, which reshapes fights into combo strings rather than careful circling.

The series is remembered as much for its script and voice work as for its mechanics. Here the games appear as reference profiles — description, details and screenshots for each entry — rather than titles that launch in the page.
